Winter sports highlights

Zwiesel and the many winter sports venues of the region present themselves every year as hosts of high- profile sporting events. So, for example, the skiing resort Großer Arber, where, for the past 35 years, the Alpine Skiing World-  or European Cup is held and the international sporting elite is competing for victory at the so called  “King of the Bavarian Forest”.

But also, the cross- country skiing season isn´t just passing by the region. So you find different regional and international competitions held annually in the Bavarian Forest, alongside the German championships in cross- country skiing.

Easter

Some time around Easter, the town of Zwiesel invites you to the biggest Easter egg searching event in the Bavarian Forest. In the urban area alone, over 3,000 specially marked Easter eggs are hidden and may be searched by children under the age of 12 during the Easter holidays. Each found egg symbolizes a little prize, which can be picked up by the children in the city center.

“Zwieseler Grenzlandfest”

The Zwieseler Grenzlandfest is a fair, which is held every year anew since 1949 and lasts for about a week, starting on the Saturday before the third last Sunday in July. Among many colorful rides, stalls and attractions, the fair offers its visitors hearty delicacies from the local festive cuisine and attracts with fun and traditional folk music performances and in the evenings with atmospheric entertainment bands, where, of course, the real folk festival jamboree arises with Dirndl, Lederhose and more.

“Zwieseler Buntspecht”

For all lovers of the arts, the Zwieseler Buntspecht opens its doors every year from August till September. The traditional art exhibition, taking place for the 51st time this year, offers a glimpse into the production and work of artists from all over Bavaria. The focus of the exhibition lies, in addition to painting with sculptures out of stone, wood, glass and metal. An also very essential part of the Buntspecht constitutes the glass objects of the local scene. All in all, a lot of very unusual and fine objects can be admired and even bought by visitors.

Zwiesel and the “Glastage”

One of the highlights of Zwiesel and vicinity constitutes the Zwieseler Glastage, which are held biennially in late summer. The Glastage is an international glass art exhibition, which is arguably the largest of its kind in the whole of Germany. The glass presentation ranges from perfectly shaped glass to quirky fun and imaginative objects and unique items. The Glastage are accompanied by a diverse range of events and culminates in the Glasnacht, a spectacular night adventure celebrating the theme of glass, fire and light. Until midnight, visitors find a colorful, varied program, including live music, culinary delights, open museums and galleries. Countless lanterns and bonfires guide the guests through the night. An outstanding public festival, you do not want to miss!

Folk music days: “Zwieseler Fink”

The annually, in November, held, oldest Bavarian “Volkstumswanderpreis: Zwieseler Fink” is a musical competition, to which folk music- and -singing groups from across the region join together to offer the audience the finest, from hearty traditional to modern- and funny songs.
